A camera can feel complicated when you first move beyond Auto mode, but you do not need to understand every menu option at once. Start with the settings that directly control exposure, focus, colour and image quality.
Once these settings become familiar, you can make deliberate creative decisions instead of depending completely on the camera's automatic choices.
ISO
ISO controls how sensitive the camera is to light. Lower ISO values such as ISO 100 usually give cleaner images,
while higher ISO values help in darker situations but can introduce more digital noise.
Beginner rule: Keep ISO as low as practical, then increase it only when you need a faster shutter speed or more exposure.
Aperture
Aperture is the opening inside the lens. It affects both brightness and depth of field.
A wider aperture such as f/1.8 can create a softer background, while f/8 or f/11
can keep more of the scene in focus.
Think of it as: Aperture decides how much of the image appears sharp from front to back.
Shutter Speed
Shutter speed controls how long the camera records light. Fast shutter speeds freeze movement; slow shutter speeds can create motion blur.

ISO, aperture and shutter speed work together. Changing one often affects the others. Learning how they balance each other is one of the most important steps in understanding manual exposure.
White Balance
White balance controls the colour temperature of your image. Different light sources can make a scene look too warm, too cool, too orange or too blue.
Auto White Balance works well in many situations, but understanding presets such as Daylight, Shade, Cloudy and Tungsten helps when colour needs more consistency.
Focus Mode
Focus mode tells the camera how to behave when focusing on a subject.
- Single AF: useful for still subjects
- Continuous AF: useful for moving subjects
- Manual Focus: useful when you want complete control
Focus Area / AF Point
Focus area determines where in the frame the camera is allowed to focus. Beginners often leave this completely automatic, but learning to choose a focus point can dramatically improve subject sharpness.
For portraits, place focus on the subject's eye whenever possible. For moving subjects, a larger tracking area may work better.
Metering Mode
Metering tells the camera how to measure brightness in a scene. Multi/Evaluative metering is a strong default for most situations. Spot or centre-weighted metering can be useful when one specific area needs priority.
Drive Mode
Drive mode controls how the camera takes photographs when you press the shutter.
- Single Shot: one image per press
- Continuous/Burst: multiple images while holding the shutter
- Self Timer: useful for tripod work or group photos
RAW vs JPEG
JPEG files are processed by the camera and are ready to share quickly. RAW files preserve much more image data, which gives greater flexibility during editing.
If you are learning editing, RAW can help you understand exposure and colour correction more deeply. If storage and speed matter more, JPEG may be simpler.
Image Stabilization & Minimum Shutter Awareness
Many cameras and lenses include stabilization that can reduce blur from small hand movements. But stabilization cannot freeze a moving subject. You still need an appropriate shutter speed for people, action or events.
A Simple Beginner Setup
If you are just starting, do not try to control everything at once. A useful learning approach is:
- Start with Aperture Priority or Manual mode
- Use Auto ISO initially, then learn to set ISO manually
- Choose the aperture based on depth of field
- Keep shutter speed fast enough to avoid blur
- Use Continuous AF for moving subjects
- Use Single AF for still subjects
- Photograph in RAW if you want maximum editing flexibility
Do Not Learn Settings in Isolation
The goal is not to memorize numbers. The goal is to understand what happens to your photograph when you change a setting. Practice the same scene at different ISO values, apertures and shutter speeds, then compare the results.
Once you can predict how a setting will affect brightness, motion, background blur and focus, your camera starts feeling much simpler.

- Photograph movement at 1/60s, 1/250s and 1/1000s
- Compare ISO 100, ISO 800 and ISO 3200
- Try Single AF and Continuous AF on the same subject
- Compare Auto White Balance with Daylight and Shade
This kind of controlled comparison teaches camera behaviour much faster than only reading technical definitions.
